A Guide to Wood Science

Wood science is the study of wood as a material that is renewable and of biological origin. The processes and the tools used to utilize the material is what is known as wood technology. To be able to study wood it has to be compared to other products. The comparison made against other products will include the features of the material against those of wood, the value and the ease it can be worked on. The utilization of technology gives wood an upper hand in most of this comparison. The wide range of products where wood can be used is just one of the many advantages that give wood an upper hand over other products. It is also based on renewable resources. Timber can be utilized in very many applications, and this makes it more valuable.

Protection of wooden structure and products is a must if you want to keep the good looks in place. The biggest threat to wood being moisture and insects has to be kept away from the wood. The rotting and decay of the timber products are caused by the moisture and the insects. There are many ways timber is treated among them being the ACQ in other words alkaline copper Quaternary. This is a copper-based preservative that is applied to the wood for protection. There are a few disadvantages of this method as a mode of wood preservation. The chemical is highly corrosive to most metals, the chemical corrodes away galvanized fasteners and therefore only stainless steel is used. The saturation level of any treatment will depend on where the wood is going to be used and the species of the wood. The level of chemical concentration will be determined by where the piece of wood is going to be put to use.

Many methods are being invented to protect the wood, and one of them is the copper metal method. This method, unlike the ACQ, is friendly to the metal fasteners and its gaining popularity very fast. An alternative name to be given to this method is the micronized copper wood preservative method. A high-pressure liquid that has the copper metal mixed in it is driven into the wood. The process eliminates the need to dissolve the copper as is done in earlier copper-based preservatives. When this process is used to treat timber the timber properties are increased highly. The wood products protected using this method last longer.

The micronized copper preservative has proven to be highly effective in protecting the wood against fungal decay and termites. Unlike other methods of treatment this method is not corrosive. The wood treated using this method last longer and is stronger.
